1. 在只能做表语的形容词前不能用very，而要使用其他的词。
例句：It's well worth trying.
这很值得一试。(不能说very worth)
I'm wide awake.
我是完全清醒的。(不能说very awake)
PS：类似这样不能和very连用的形容词还有：afloat，alight，alive，alone，alike等。它们可以和much或very much连用。
例句：The two brothers are very much alike.
这两兄弟非常相像。
2. 在过去分词用作谓语动词时不可和very连用，要用much、very much或quite等说明程度。
例句：The financial situation seems to be much/very much improved.
财政状况似乎有了很大好转。(不能说very improved)
Britain's trade position has been much/very much weakened by inflation.
通货膨胀很大程度上削弱了英国的贸易地位。
PS：①当过去分词指的是一种状态或性质时，可和very连用。
例句：a very frightened animal
一只极度受惊的动物
②当过去分词用作谓语动词，但表示一个人对某事的反应时，可与very连用。
例句：We were all very shocked by the news about Tony.
我们听到关于托尼的消息都很震惊。
有些人在这种情况下宁愿用much不用very，但在现代英语非正式文体中常用very。
3.现在分词一般不能和very连用，要用much、quite或其他词。
例句：The theory sounds quite convincing.
这意见听起来很有说服力。
又如：不能说very screaming(尖声喊叫的)children，应该使用像continually or loudly screaming children这样的表达;singing birds也不可说成very singing birds等等。
Very只可和已转用为形容词的现在分词连用，例如：very interesting(很有趣)，very exciting(非常令人兴奋)等。
在有的副词前不用very要用well或quite表示“很，非常，完全”之意。
例句：His name is well up in the list.
他的名字排在名单的前面。
动词也不和very连用，要用其他副词，如much/very much和quite等修饰。
例句：I should much like to come.
我很想来。
